All over the world it is impossible to talk about Surrealism without speaking of Salvador Dalí, nor to talk about Dalí without mentioning Figueres. We invite you to take a guided visit around the places in Figueres where Dalí was born, lived and died, the town where he wanted to leave his most emblematic work.
As the capital of the Empordà, the district’s dedication to tourism makes Figueres the nerve centre of the Costa Brava and the most important town close to the French border, being a gateway and an obligatory stopping point for travellers and tourists.
Dalí Theatre-Museum: Inaugurated in 1974 and built over the remains of the old Figueres Theatre, the Museum contains a huge variety of works that portray the artistic career of Salvador Dalí (1904-1989), from his first artistic experiments and his Surrealist creations to the works of the last years of his life.
Catalonia Toy Museum: Inaugurated in 1982 in the premises of the old Hotel París in the Rambla of Figueres, the Museum exhibits over 4,000 items: cardboard horses, toy kitchens, balls, tops, planes, cars, trains, dolls, puppets, and so on. Many of these pieces are accompanied by old photographs of children with their toys.
Empordà Museum: Conserves one of the leading art collections of the district. Created in 1946, the history of its collections dates back to the late 19th century, originating from the deposits of Madrid’s Museo del Prado and donations and bequests made by illustrious Empordanese personages.
The historical town
The town has an important monumental wealth, with a special mention for the old medieval walls and the Castle of Sant Ferran (constructed in the 18th C.), along with abundant examples of Modernist and Neo-Classical architecture all around the town centre.
Culture is alive and well in Figueres: fairs, festivities, festivals... The town offers an extensive range of cultural activities throughout the year. If you are culture lovers, you must not miss the town’s regular programming and its most prominent events, like the Acústica Festival or the International Circus Festival
Sports and Nature
Hiking and cycle tourism routes enable visitors to discover the most emblematic spots of the town and the district, such as the Eix Figueres-Roses, the Route of the Castle of Sant Ferran, the Nature Trail of La Muga and the Nature Trail of the River Manol
